Does it have to be plugged into an electricity socket. How many glue boards are included with the trap?
Flyshield Solo Insect Trap must be plugged in to work properly and that the item comes with 1 glueboard. Replacement boards are available in packs of 6.
How can I find replacement bulbs for my fly killer?
When listing products on our website, we always try to link any accessories to the original product, to make it easy for you to order any accessories or replacement parts. If you find the item you originally purchased on the website, you should be able to see the link to the bulbs you need. Then just click in to the bulb and select the right size for your fly killer. If you need any help in choosing the correct bulbs, our sales team are on hand to help. CNM Sales 0844 884 2900
Can I use my fly killer outside?
Some fly killers are suitable for use outdoors- you can find these items in the outdoor insect killer section on our website. https://www.cnmonline.co.uk/Outdoor-Insect-Killers-c-1395.html

During the day time the UV light would not particularly stand out to the flies, as the natural light would be a competing light source. If however, any fly did land on the fly killer during the day then it would get zapped still. For the best performance on an electric fly killer the machine would need to be kept on during the evening, and placed in a shaded area.

The bait traps work very well during the day time as the ingredients are activated by the sun. https://www.cnmonline.co.uk/Red-Top-Fly-Trap-pr-33080.html

This type of fly killer requires no maintenance at all, simply add the ingredients in the sachet with water- as per the instructions and hang it up approximately 5 metres away from the area you are trying to protect.
How long should my UV bulbs last?
The UV bulbs do not come with any warranty and much like a household bulb it is difficult to suggest an actual ‘life-expectancy’ on bulbs. We generally suggest that bulbs should be replaced annually even if they appear to be working fine as the UV output may have started to deteriorate.
What is the difference between a normal fly killer and a glue board fly killer?
Electric and glue board fly killers are similar, in that they both use UV light in order to attract the flies. They do however differ in how they actually kill the flies. The electric type fly killers have an electrocution grid and as the flies are attracted towards the UV light they land on the grid and get ‘zapped’. The dead flies fall in to the removable tray at the bottom of the fly killer which can be emptied and put back in again. Glue board machines have a sticky glue board within the unit. As the flies are attracted towards the UV light, they land on the glue board and get stuck. The dead flies remain on the glue board which is removed and disposed of once it is full.

Glue board machines are particularly good if you have a range of different flies. Smaller ‘midge’ type flies are not always caught by the electrocution type fly killers as they are so small they can sometimes fly straight through the machines without making contact with the grid. Also glue board machines tend to be more discreet in their design- a lot of the ones we have available on our website do not look like traditional fly killers. After the initial purchase of the electrocution type fly killer the only part you need to replace in order to keep the unit functioning are the UV bulbs. The glue board fly killer requires both UV bulbs and glue boards.
Why has my fly killer not caught many flies?
With a fly killer, we would need to establish if the item is faulty, or if perhaps it is how the item is being used that is causing the problem. Electric fly killers are a fairly basic item, the bulbs are there to emit UV light in order to attract the flies and the electrocution grid zaps any flies that land on it when they come to investigate. If your bulbs are lit and the grid is working then the unit is working. If you feel that the grid is not working, you can test the grid with a grid tester, please call our customer services team on 0844 884 2999, so we can discuss the problem, a grid tester can be arranged if required. If the bulbs and the grid are working, we need to look at how you are using your item. Common house flies are generally attracted towards UV light, but they are unable to differentiate between the UV light emitted from the fly killer and the natural light coming from outside, so the fly killer is more effective if positioned in a darker area of the room and it ideally needs to be left on overnight. The effectiveness of the unit is also dependant on the fly’s age- some types of fly are born blind and only develop sight after 4 or 5 days so switching on a fly killer is not necessarily going to draw them all towards it immediately, it depends on the life cycle. This does not indicate a problem with the fly killer; it is just the way that they have to work. If you think the flies are small then they are probably young flies and not using their eyes to investigate food sources but relying on smell and taste through their feet. If this is the case then to improve catch rate you could use small amounts of food like raw fish or raw meat.

Killing flies is notoriously difficult because they are so mobile and reproduce so quickly. For the best approach you really need to tackle it from a number of directions. We would suggest a measure to prevent flies entering your property, i.e. a door curtain or window screen and then a fly killer on the inside to keep on top of any flies that do manage to find their way inside. Also, where flies are coming from surrounding fields you would be advised to have an outdoor bait type trap, as a way of pulling flies away from the property in the first place.
Which type of fly killer should I choose?
Eradicating flying insects is notoriously difficult because they are so mobile and reproduce so quickly. For the best approach you really need to tackle it from a number of directions. We would begin by suggesting a measure to prevent flies entering your property, i.e. a door curtain or window screen. https://www.cnmonline.co.uk/Doorway-Insect-Curtain-Charcoal-Grey-pr-31308.html

A fly killer of some description on the inside is then necessary to keep on top of any flies that do manage to find their way inside. Also, as an additional measure- especially where flies are coming from surrounding fields, farms or bins you would be advised to have an outdoor bait type trap, as a way of tempting flies away from the property in the first place. https://www.cnmonline.co.uk/Red-Top-Fly-Trap-pr-33080.html

When choosing your fly killer you do need to take several factors in to account; what type of flies are you tackling? What is the size of the area that you are trying to cover? Where do you plan to install the fly killer? Where are the flies coming from?

Different types of flies need to be addresses differently- smaller midge type flies or fruit flies may not be caught by electric fly killers as they are very small and we would recommend a glue board type fly killer https://www.cnmonline.co.uk/X-Fly-2-36-watt.-pr-16463.html. Common house flies can generally be caught by both electric and glue board fly killers as they, along with most other flying insects are generally attracted to UV light, but only after they have gained their sight after the first few days of life. If you have a problem with cluster flies, you will usually be advised to go for a fly killer with a cluster fly tray in order to catch all of the flies; https://www.cnmonline.co.uk/T35-15-Watt-White-Insect-Killer-pr-16217.html

If you have small flies in a small area you may wish to try some of the smaller ‘sticky traps’, like fly papers. https://www.cnmonline.co.uk/Fly-Papers-8-Pack-pr-34833.html They are cheap to buy and ideal as a starting point. You would be advised to have these in a discreet place as they can be unsightly.

If you are tackling bigger flies, or you have a large area affected, or the smaller fly papers are not getting rid of all of the flies, you may then wish to consider an electrocution type fly killer; https://www.cnmonline.co.uk/EcoZap-Insect-Killer-pr-35496.html or a glue board fly killer. We do generally list the area that any fly killer can cover on the product description to help you choose the right size fly killer. The different types of fly killer can be mounted in a variety of ways- some can be free standing, wall mounted or suspended from the ceiling. If you have a particular requirement you may want to check the product description thoroughly or call us for advice before making your purchase.

If you know where the flies are coming from, this can also help you to get rid of the problem. A fly infestation can suddenly arise if perhaps you have been laying down mouse traps, or had a bird in the loft etc.- the decaying bodies can attract flies so it may be worth investigating this. A lot of rural properties have fly problems during the summer as the flies like to breed and feed upon animal waste, so tacking the problem outside using bait traps can help to reduce the problem. https://www.cnmonline.co.uk/Red-Top-Fly-Trap-pr-33080.html

Insect control is a maintenance project- it would be very difficult to eradicate the problem completely especially during the warm summer months. If you would like any more advice, please feel free to call us to discuss your particular problem. Customer Services: 0844 884 2999
