During the day time the UV light would not particularly stand out to the flies, as the natural light would be a competing light source. If however, any fly did land on the fly killer during the day then it would get zapped still. For the best performance on an electric fly killer the machine would need to be kept on during the evening, and placed in a shaded area.

This type of fly killer requires no maintenance at all, simply add the ingredients in the sachet with water- as per the instructions and hang it up approximately 5 metres away from the area you are trying to protect.

The UV bulbs do not come with any warranty and much like a household bulb it is difficult to suggest an actual ‘life-expectancy’ on bulbs. We generally suggest that bulbs should be replaced annually even if they appear to be working fine as the UV output may have started to deteriorate.

Electric and glue board fly killers are similar, in that they both use UV light in order to attract the flies. They do however differ in how they actually kill the flies. The electric type fly killers have an electrocution grid and as the flies are attracted towards the UV light they land on the grid and get ‘zapped’. The dead flies fall in to the removable tray at the bottom of the fly killer which can be emptied and put back in again. Glue board machines have a sticky glue board within the unit. As the flies are attracted towards the UV light, they land on the glue board and get stuck. The dead flies remain on the glue board which is removed and disposed of once it is full.

Glue board machines are particularly good if you have a range of different flies. Smaller ‘midge’ type flies are not always caught by the electrocution type fly killers as they are so small they can sometimes fly straight through the machines without making contact with the grid. Also glue board machines tend to be more discreet in their design- a lot of the ones we have available on our website do not look like traditional fly killers. After the initial purchase of the electrocution type fly killer the only part you need to replace in order to keep the unit functioning are the UV bulbs. The glue board fly killer requires both UV bulbs and glue boards.

With a fly killer, we would need to establish if the item is faulty, or if perhaps it is how the item is being used that is causing the problem. Electric fly killers are a fairly basic item, the bulbs are there to emit UV light in order to attract the flies and the electrocution grid zaps any flies that land on it when they come to investigate. If your bulbs are lit and the grid is working then the unit is working. The effectiveness of the unit is also dependant on the fly’s age- some types of fly are born blind and only develop sight after 4 or 5 days so switching on a fly killer is not necessarily going to draw them all towards it immediately, it depends on the life cycle. This does not indicate a problem with the fly killer; it is just the way that they have to work. If you think the flies are small then they are probably young flies and not using their eyes to investigate food sources but relying on smell and taste through their feet. If this is the case then to improve catch rate you could use small amounts of food like raw fish or raw meat.
